Obituary for Dorothy D. Lewis-Broxson (Reek)

Dorothy Dene “Teddi” Lewis-Broxson passed from this life on Monday, April 22, 2019 at the age of 83 years old.

Dorothy was born in Riverside, CA on October 8, 1935 and, always a “Cali girl” at heart, loved the ocean, visiting it as often as she could. She was the youngest child of her parents, John Harrison Reeks and Ola Lodeama during their marriage, becoming a big sister with the births of her three younger brothers after her mother’s remarriage.

She was blessed in this life with two loving marriages, both filled with laughter and adventure. In 1953 she met and married her first love, Augusta Lee Lewis, having three children in their 27 years together before it ended with his sudden death in 1980. Eight years later, she met and married John Philip Broxson and they were married until his death in 1996.

Teddi was also blessed with the endearing friendship of James H. Bond. His love, care and support have been a true blessing for many years.

She had a lifelong commitment to God, reading her Bible daily, raising her three children, Shannon, Sharon and Daniel in the church, singing in the choir and working in the daycare.

Dorothy was a homemaker, then worked for the Dallas (TX) Public Library system for over 20 years, working up from book shelver to the assistant to the director of the library system.

She loved reading, writing, music (especially opera) and travel; visiting Europe, Hawaii, Alaska and her beloved California, as well as many other states with her family while growing up the daughter of a sharecropper and after both of her marriages.

She spent every moment she could with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whether they were in the states or overseas, showering them with love, kisses and, of course, presents. Sadly, due to her illness, she was unable to meet two of her three great-grandsons.

Dorothy, Teddi, was preceded in death by Augusta Lee Lewis (1980), second husband John Philip Broxson (1996) and oldest daughter Shannon Dene (Shou Shou) Lewis (2015), her parents John Harrison Reeks and Ola Lodeama Reeks Weems (Gamble), her two sisters Lois and Martha and baby brother Grady.

Teddi is survived by her daughter, Sharon Leigh Lewis- Hamblett (Ronald) of Springfield, MO. and son, Daniel Shay Lewis (Laura) of Paris, TX. Grandchildren: Alysia Deerwester (Jeremy), Ariel Thacker (Michael), Aislyn Reddecliff (Silas), Aryana Nissen(Matthew) and Willem Lewis. Great-grandchildren: Ava Deerwester, Ella Deerwester, Everett Thacker, Lukas Thacker and Holden Nissen, siblings: Mary Ann Joest, Thomas E. Reeks, David Weems and Dennis Weems.

As Teddi loved to say to one and all, “Vaya con Dios”, until we meet again.

A private service will be held.
