Obituary for Gordon Owen Weidelman
Gordon Owen Weidelman, 74, passed away Saturday, March 23rd after battling a long illness at Cox South Hospital. He leaves his wife Sharon; his sons, Christian (Jana) and Timothy (Tara); as well as his brothers Gary, Jerry, Richie and their families.
Gordon was born in Lima, Ohio to Ruth and Carl Weidelman. His father became estranged from the family leaving Ruthie to raise Gordon and his three brothers. They spent much of their life in New Jersey on a horse farm and down by the shore. Ruthie had to play both the role of mother and father and was honored as such each Mother’s and Father’s Day. After holding several jobs, Gordon joined the Lily-Tulip Cup Corporation where he would work for over thirty years.
Gordon met Sharon and married in 1978. They had just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary this past December. Soon afterwards they had their first son, Christian, and just a year later their second son Timothy. Due to a plant closure, Gordon chose to stay with the company and move to a factory in Springfield, Missouri in 1982.
After a few years, the family settled in Ozark, Missouri to raise their two sons. During this time, Gordon was an active member of the community helping coach baseball and basketball teams. He also was a founding member of the Ozark chapter of Knights of Columbus attached to St Joseph the Worker Catholic Church. Gordon also supported his wife Sharon as she ran her Italian restaurant, “The Terrace Pasta Pub” and as she worked in city government for the city of Ozark.
As their children entered middle school, Gordon and Sharon decided to move back to Springfield, so that they may attend Catholic schooling. Both sons graduated from Springfield Catholic High School and went to college. After the nest emptied, Gordon started a new career as a fresh batch of downsizing occurred at the plant.
Gordon took it a bit easier as he neared closer to retirement. He would enjoy a drink with friends and co-workers from time to time. He liked rustling up his friends to go down to the range and shoot some targets or getting the boys together for a lunch. During this time, you could find Gordon at a church breakfast flipping flapjacks or handing out turkeys at Thanksgiving to those who had none.
Gordon worked several years into his retirement age, not ready to hang up his hat just yet. In retirement, Gordon would continue to enjoy the company of his friends and family. His health took a turn in the last several years, which resulted in him becoming less active but he maintained his sense of humor throughout his illnesses, which was a comfort to his family.
While he left us all too soon, he will be remembered as a loving husband, understanding father, resolute brother, and friend to all. He will be missed greatly by many.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM Tuesday April 2, 2019 in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with scripture services to begin at 7 PM in the church. Memorial Mass will be at 10:30 AM Wednesday April 3rd, 2019 in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Fr. Tom Kiefer celebrant. Committal services to follow in Resurrection Cemetery.
